Must see when visiting Fez which is famous for the leather Tannery's. The Big one located on the outer side of the Medina, you can have a overview by entering one of the stores/ cooperatives (be aware that the might want to sell you something afterwards). You get a nice glimpse about the process from animal hides to leather.

Had a fantastic experience visiting the tanneries. Our guide prepped us up for the tolerating the foul leather smell. They gave us mint leaves to keep smelling to tolerate the smell however, I felt it was very much tolerable. The tour started with the history of tanneries. Our guide explained us the process of how they make the leather. The views from the top were gorgeous.

Chouara Tannery offers a unique glimpse into one of Fez's oldest and most traditional crafts. The sight of the vibrant dye pits and the workers engaged in the ancient process of leather-making is mesmerizing. However, the strong smell can be overwhelming, so be prepared (a sprig of mint helps!). Despite the odor, it's an unforgettable experience.

Lovely stop when visiting Fez! They give u explanations about the history for free and give you some mint to smell because it stiiinks! Also good to go their in the morning before the medina opens since they open quite early. Definitely buy something to support this local shop!

The first tannery that I have ever visited. To get to see the place, you need to enter some house, that will probably be a shop with leather products, and walk up the stairs to a terrace to see the tannery down below. I have heard that some buildings/shops ask you for some money, others will just try to convince you to buy something. The place stinks. Some people carry mint leaves with them to manage the smell.

A bit smelly but certainly a highlight visit among the winding alleys and streets within the old Medina of Fes. Of course this shop is there to sell you on buying some leather goods but there is no pressure to buy and you have to use your bartering skills like anywhere else in Morocco.
